Special People
al-Hamdu lilLah for everything... wa subHan Allah.
There are people who become so special to me, that quite frankly, I don't want to see how my life would be like without them... be it family, friends, elderly, children, and whoever it may be that makes it in my special category.
subHan Allah, when I hear about people dying, it only makes me more grateful to be with those that I love, and it makes me extremely grateful to just think about how merciful Allah has been to allow them to still be alive and to be a part of my life... I don't think I can ever ever say alHamdu lilLah enough for what I have, it's literally so much.
It was just a couple of days ago I heard about a death of a 17 yr old, who was in a car with 5 other brothers. He is said to be the only one who died. Also, earlier this year, a distant cousin of mine who I believe was 18 yrs old in Chicago died, he was driving home from work and was hit by a drunk driver. We really don't know how short of a time we have on Earth, we just don't. alHamdu lilLah that I still have those I love around me...
subHan Allah I have a brother who is 17 yrs old, turning 18 in January, I can't thank Allah enough for protecting my family from any harm, subHan Allah, we belong to Allah, and to Him we are surely returning, Ar-Rahman, alHamdu lilLah.

My Beautiful Mornings... al Hamdu lilLah

Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays early in the morning I enter into a serene pathway that leads to my class. I don't believe I have walked through this pathway one morning without remembering Allah in some way, or having a verse from the Qur'an gently enter into my mind and pump through my heart.
Verses like in Surah Ar-Rahman:
5.
Ash-Shamsu wa al-Qamaru biĥusbānin.
The sun and the moon are made punctual.
الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ بِحُسْبَانٍ
6.
Wa an-Najmu wa ash-Shajaru yasjudāni.
The stars and the trees adore.
وَالنَّجْمُ وَالشَّجَرُ يَسْجُدَانِ
7.
Wa as-Samā'a Rafa`ahā wa Wađa`a al-Mīzāna.
And the sky He hath uplifted; and He hath set the measure,
وَالسَّمَاء رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ الْمِيزَانَ
Aaa, my morning walks... I need to take a picture of the flowers one day, subHan Allah they are so beautiful. I don't know why people pick them out of the earth and make bouquets out of them, just leave them alone, and let them worship Allah.

lqtm.. my brothers outsmarted me..
My baby brother slowly opens my door stands there and then asked me, "Am I the worst failure?"
I looked at him with this what-a-silly-question expression on my face and I told him, "of course not."
Then my older brother came in and said, "You're messed up" ... "you're so messed up."
I replied, "How am I messed up?"
He answered, "he asked you if he was the *worst* failure, which means he's bad at failing. You're basically saying your brother is a failure"
(then of course this big smile came upon my face) and my brother continues, "Ha! I outsmarted you!"
lqtm, indeed he did.
Listening Manners
This is pretty valuable information ...

Islamic Manners: The Art of Listening
Shaykh Abdul Fattah Abu Ghudda
Islamic Manners
(c) 2001 Awakening Publications
If a person starts telling you, whether in private or public, something that you already knew very well, you should pretend as if you do not know it. Do not rush to reveal your knowledge or to interfere with the speech. Instead, show your attention and concentration. The honorable tab'i Imam Ata ibn Abi Rabah said: "A young man would tell me something that I may have heard before he was born. Nevertheless, I would listen to him as if I had never heard it before."
Khalid ibn Safwan al-Tamimi, who frequented the courts of two Khalifahs: Umar ibn Abdul Aziz and Hisham ibn Abdul Malik, said: "If a person tells you something you have heard before, or news that you already learned, do not interrupt him to exhibit your knowledge to those present. This is rude and ill mannered." The honorable Imam Abdullah ibn Wahab al-Qurashi al-Masri, a companion of Imam Malik, Al-Laith ibn Sad and Al-Thawri, said: "Sometimes a person would tell me a story that I have heard before his parents had wed. Yet, I listened as if I have never heard it before." Ibrahim ibn al-Junaid said: "A wise man said to his son: 'Learn the art of listening as you learn the art of speaking.'" Listening well means maintaining eye contact, allowing the speaker to finish the speech, and restraining your urge to interrupt his speech. Al-Hafiz al-Khatib al-Baghdadi said in a poem:
Never interrupt a talk
Though you know it inside out

subHan Allah
Okay... this whole gratefulness bit is just way too cool. The more grateful you are, the more you recieve.
Here's a simple example, my baby brother comes in the room, I tell him, "You give the best hugs, you always do." Then he comes and hugs me, (and because I love his hugs so much and want another one) I tell him, "That was so nice, thank you so much, alHamdu lilLah you give the best hugs, thank you, thank you, thank you, that made me feel so good."...Then he hugs me again, and I then say, "whoa, that's too much, you're giving me too many hugs! it's too much!!!"... hehe, gratefulness rocks.
tangents:
I remember I was at my uncles house and his 3 yr old girl got a toy taken away from her. She's laying on the floor crying, (I like hearing children cry, it's challenging) I go up to her and I say, " you know that when you're crying you're not allowed to smile." ... "when you're sad, smiling is sooo bad" ... "please don't smile you're sad".... "hey, heeeeey, what are you doing? no smiling!!! you're supposed to be sad"... "stop smiling, stop it, stop it, that's not what sad people do"... "oh no, she's laughing, she's laughing... you are breaking all the rules!!!" hehe... that doesn't work all the time though.
One of my older brothers made me happy the other day, he said somethings that made me feel good. He was talking about a hijabi in his class, I guess some guy came and hugged her (okay hearing news like that would definitely not make me happy) but what did make me happy was what he told her. He said to her, "you know if some guy did that to my sister she would have picked him up and threw him over the fence." I started laughing, cuz it's true. Speaking about true, we were talking about the new X-box that just came out and the crazy prices people are selling it for, and I told my brother, "I don't understand why people would pay so much for a game, it makes no sense" ... he then tells me, "I would love to relate this to something that you like, but you don't want anything." I thought about it, he's right, only, there are things I want, just not that much.
It's really nice to think that people see me in such a positive way, to have a good impression and good thoughts about me... and what warms my heart, is that it is family who are saying these things. When it all comes down to it, it really doesn't matter what people think about me, as long as I know what I'm doing, and if it is right or wrong, and that I seek forgiveness when I need to, also that I'm always grateful. Although, to a certain extent I do care what people think, perhaps it's because we are social creatures.
Allah knows best.
subHan Allah..."Verily, in the remembrance of God do hearts find rest" Qu'ran 13:28
alHamdu lilLah for everything,... everything.

Az-Zukhruf

I've just been thinking about these verses ...
12.
Wa al-Ladhī Khalaqa al-'Azwāja kullahā wa ja`ala lakum mina al-Fulki wa al-'An`ām Mā tarkabūna.
He Who created all the pairs, and appointed for you ships and cattle whereupon ye ride.
وَالَّذِي خَلَقَ الْأَزْوَاجَ كُلَّهَا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ الْفُلْكِ وَالْأَنْعَامِ مَا تَرْكَبُونَ
13.
Litastawū `alá Žuhūrihi thumma tadhkurū ni`mata Rabbikum 'idhā istawaytum `alayhi wa taqūlū Subĥāna al-Ladhī Sakhkhara lanā Hādhā wa Mā Kunnā lahu Muqrinīna.
That ye may mount upon their backs, and may remember your Lord's favour when ye mount thereon, and may say: Glorified be He Who hath subdued these unto us, and we were not capable (of subduing them);
14.
Wa 'innā 'ilá Rabbinā lamunqalibūna.
And lo! unto our Lord we surely are returning.
وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ
________
I guess, there are a lot of things about these verses that have been circulating in my mind.
for example:
Why does it start off saying we have created you in pairs?
And when it talks about ships and cattle, there is no difference in that they both have a back that you mount on, so this du`a' can surely be said on anything that you use as transportation (ex. car) they take us where we want to go... and speaking about trips.. as the interpretation of Allah's words continue, unto our Lord we are surely returning... so perhaps we are also mounting on this dunya, riding it until we meet our destination with Allah.

Fahmy Huweidi
Just sharing something I enjoyed reading...
Fahmy Huweidi:
A French woman journalist, after many words about the situations of the Arab woman, asked me if there was hope for the "liberation" of the Muslim woman catching up to European standards. The question irritated me, and I replied that the question for its part is in need of "liberation." The understanding of liberation is in need of precision since I do not support the claim that the Western woman is, in fact, liberated. My answer did not surprise her. She replied, "What do you mean by precision?"
I said, if what is meant by the liberation of the Western woman that which has come out of the Beijing document, then neither do we want it nor do we welcome it. Our "reactionary ways" are much more honorable and more noble than that kind of liberation. This because the Beijing doctrine mixes notions of liberation with the shattering of the family, escapism, and decadence wherein there is no respect for the home, and no respect for husbands, or children, or mothers. The woman is being pressured and is under attack to work outside the home, and to divide her sovereignty with the man in everything, from political and administrative leadership to washing the dishes and caring for nursing children! ... The document discusses adolescent pregnancy and the right a woman has over her own body. While we understand liberation as liberation of women from ignorance and backwardness, the guarding of her honor, and the struggle of traditions which sometimes diminishes her abilities, we must also deal with her considering her role as the nucleus of the family which in turn is the basic cell of society together with the desire for her actualization in mutuality, knowledge, and work.
I added that the Western woman has regrettably become more of a sex object than a collaborative co-partner and a constituent part in the building up of society. She prefers to be a "slave" to clothing designers, perfume manufacturers, and purveyors of makeup: those who mandate what she will wear and everything she needs to make herself pretty, how she will arrange her hair, sometimes even how she will walk and which shoes she should wear. She will not become truly liberated until she frees herself from the authority of those businessmen who rule over her life and who barter with and trade away her femininity and her beauty.
I said: I do not think that the Arab woman is better off, but, I believe that the European woman is even more miserable and wretched. Comparative statistics on the rates of suicide, the numbers of destroyed families, injuries at the hands of fugitives, criminals, and drug addicts all clearly indicate that Arab women have a higher percentage of stability and higher level of personal safety than their counterparts from the West.
Finally, I said, in summation, that of all the errors committed by many Westerners, and some Muslims, too, the worst by far has been to hold up the model of the Western woman as better and more advanced

huh? that's weird.
So now he's associated with the "National Responsibility" .. or in Hebrew "Achrayut Leumit" [thank you Mr. Horen]. This is supposedly a centrist Israeli political party. Centrist as in promoting moderist policies... hmm... interesting.

They Fly Because They Think They Can
I remember as a child we used to have a clock that had a picture of birds flying on it, and under the picture of the birds, it said: They fly because they think they can
...birds are ‘capable’ of flying, and because of that if they think they can fly, they will fly. So why is this significant? Well, imagine all the things that we are ‘capable’ of doing... and how sometimes if someone just gives us the motivation to think positively the task can be done.
In a conversation with a friend, she said something rather interesting! she said:
seriously i remember my bro - helping me move out - he couldn’t lift the box and my cuz was like come on man you can do it, you can do it and he did!
Motivation goes a loooong way! and Attitude is Altitude!
Check this out :

"Two men of equal physical strength may carry the same load. The first may complain as if he carried double the weight, while the other may laugh and sing as if he carried nothing."

"Two men of similar physique may suffer from the same illness. One may react pessimistically and may always be thinking of death, thereby intensifying his illness, whereas the other may endure patiently, feel optimistic and expect a quick recovery, thereby expediting his return to a state of good health."

"A man exhausted with illness would at once jump out of bed if he suddenly noticed a snake crawling towards him. He would act as if he were full of health and vigor. "

People ~CAN~ strengthen and fortify themselves against pain and discomfort.
It is extremely important to keep a positive attitude and besides:
They Fly Because They Think They Can.

Middle Mood
The mood that someone is in is so important, sooo important. SubHan Allah how Allah has created humans with all types of moods, we taste happiness, anger, disappointment, frustration, stress, sadness, warmth, love, excitement, enjoyment, ease, hardship, and on and on. Different days, with a different mood, different tests. How does one control their happiness? anger? disappointment? ...
HOW... ?
I believe that by gratefulness, and understanding that things are decreed to be a certain way somehow level out to a middle mood, a really nice middle mood.
Usually I have to fight my happiness, I don't like being too happy, I have to control it. It's a quiet happiness, something I feel inside, for example this happens when I pass by flowers. Heh, it's really funny because I don't realize I'm smiling, and friends would say to me, "I passed by you in my car this morning and you were smiling, what made you so happy?"... and I'm thinking, 'I was smiling? really?'.. and I'll tell them, "must be the flowers, weren't they beautiful this morning?"
This inside tickling, inside butterflies and giggly feeling, it's so nice.. I get it when I see children, when I see Muslims, when I see beautiful masajid, when I hear good speech, when I smell my mothers food, or my grandmothers food, when I see friends or people after a long time, such a happy happy feeling... but it needs to be controlled, and alHamdu lilLah for such good moods.
Today, for some reason, I tasted the opposite end of this happiness, a very deep sadness. Sadness coupled with weakness, and I felt ... I felt... well I'm not sure how to describe it but my heart softened and tears dropped very easily. subHan Allah ... just a very low mood, it didn't last too long, but truly we are so weak, and moods play a major role in our lives. I really didn't have a good reason to cry, I think I just overburdened myself with too many thoughts at one time... but then again, I needed a good cry, I really did. Do we honestly think we can live on this Earth and not be tested? we must tested... those whom Allah loves are tested, I hope I am of those who are loved.
Speaking about hope, what a powerful word. I seriously have a strong hope I enter Jannah, a very very strong hope. I don't want this hope to be a false hope, I don't want to imagine this hope of entering jannah is a hope that doesn't play through, I'll be devastated! subHan Allaaaaah.... When I think of those in Jahanam I feel like I can hear them yelling, screaming, " yā laytanī Kuntu turābā !!!"... chills. Ya Rab.... and what I want, what I strongly want, what I hope for, is to hear is:
Fādkhulī fī `ibādī.
29.
"Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves,
فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي
30.
Wa udkhulī Jannatī.
.
"And enter you My Paradise!"
وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي "
... ya Allah... this hope. This is one hope that I want to see a successful end for, more than any other hope that I have right now.
I guess when we think of how vulnerable we are, tears just come easily and perhaps naturally. Right now I'm back at the middle mood, that's the way I like it, this mood makes life really nice. It's really amazing how we switch moods though... one minute we are sad, next we are laughing, next we are crying... subHan Allah, the middle nothing mood, that's the one I like.

Young Revert
A few weeks ago I recieved a voice mail from a teenage girl. She basically left a message saying that she got my number from a friend, and that she is a new revert to Islam and that she's going through a hard time and needs someone to help her out. So I called her back and just listened to her, and then told her that I would be there for her and all that good stuff.
Anyways, she called me last night to say that she was going to visit me on campus, and today we met!!! I introduced her to people I know and did my best to make her feel comforted. She was smiling and laughing a lot so I feel that she didn't feel any uneasiness, and that was my goal, so alHamdu lilLah.
subHan Allah she's only 15 or 16 years old ... Barak Allahu Fiha.
Say: O mankind! Now hath the Truth from your Lord come unto you. So whosoever is guided, is guided only for (the good of) his soul, and whosoever erreth erreth only against it. And I am not a warder over you. (Chapter #10, Verse #108)

Curious Minds
There is so much in this world to think about, to learn about, to understand, alHamdu lilLah. Learning is the most amazing experience, that feeling of " Ohhhh! " ... that makes life enjoyable!
I love learning about people, to go into their lives and to learn about what made them who they are. It's like history, the more history you know the more you understand why people do what they do, and why things happen the way that they do, it makes things... "ooooh" understandable.
I remember when I was young I used to watch my mom do the dishes, just staring at her cleaning the plates, and cups, and spoons, and forks... until one day, I asked her, "mom, can you teach me how you do that?" and she taught me, and I had to do it every night for so long... sometimes we are better off not learning how to do things.
However, in college I met a teacher who told the class "when faced with a problem, turn it into an opportunity to be creative" ... I'm not saying that doing the dishes is a problem, but that you can take something that is not so enjoyable to do, and make it enjoyable. Go to the sink, light some candles, play Qur'an and just do the dishes, it turns into a calming meditation kinda thing, heh.
There are ways around just about everything. Curious minds find a way to fix things, discover things, imagine things. Aaa, a curious mind.
I strongly feel that one should be very grateful for good information, for people who are willing to teach, for books and documentaries. It's exciting to learn, it gives me this feeling of being one step closer to understanding this world. What makes me enter deep awe is the vast amount of knowledge there is out there to learn. A person can spend their whole life just learning about what happened in 13 th century West Africa because of how much history there is there. One can spend their whole life, their whole life, venturing into the world of an eyeball and all of its complexities. There's just sooo much information out there, it's beyooond me.
Sometimes I must admit, I get pretty depressed when I don't know something... but soon after, I shake out of that feeling and think,... "then just learn it"... put in the effort, and it comes.
Now forgetting, that's a problem. Sometimes I work so hard, sooo hard to learn something, to find that years later because I had not rehearsed it, or reviewed it, that I had forgotten it. It's easier to relearn something than it is to learn something fresh and new from the start, but still I don't like the fact that knowledge can fade away.
My dad and my brothers have an amazing memory capacity, my dad was reciting poetry from first grade that he remembers, and when I was reading an old history book my father said something like, "oh I read that when I was your brothers age, if you have any questions I can elaborate on it for you."... and I did have questions, and he knew how to answer them. I don't know how he can retain knowledge he doesn't even review. Does he have tighter neuron connections than I do? and why didn't this trait get passed on to me? I can barely remember what I ate this morning.
lqtm, but some knowledge is just totally useless. I remember watching The Weakest Link with my mom and I believe the question was, "Who had a bird fly into him while on a rollercoaster, that broke his nose"... something like that anyways, and I answered, "FABIO!"[not to be mistaken with Fadio!].. and I was correct. Later on I was thinking, why do I know that? why... do ... I ... know... that? heh. I guess, when we learn things that are absurd it's easier to remember.
Then there are times, I find that I have remembered something amazing. Some information we know is just amazing amazing amazing stuff... like, walking to class today I was looking at the flowers and trees and Qur'anic verses came to mind... oh how I love when that happens. I also love when a verse will be stuck in my head all day long. I remember one day during RamaDan, the whole day, all I could think about was, "Al Haqqah, mal haqqah, wa ma adiraka mal haqqah" gotta love when that happens.
so yea, what was I talking about? curious minds! I love curious minds.
And if all the trees in the earth were pens, and the sea, with seven more seas to help it, (were ink), the words of Allah could not be exhausted. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Wise. [31:27]
`Uthman dan Fodio
He was a 18th century revolutionary scholar in West Africa... Basically, the way he taught others about madhabs and sufism helped me clear up some tangles in my mind:
"He also taught that all madhabs (schools of law), were correct so that people should respect them and the people within each school. He also tried to rectify the position of Islamic scholarship with sufism. Actually, he was also considered to be a leading part of the Qadarwi Sufi order. Yet, at the same time he made it clear that anybody who went into tasawaf should only go into it for knowledge of the heart. Any whirling around, musical playing, or extremism that was not [within] Shari'a he was against. His followers practiced a sober, individual type of Sufism that was more into heavy reflection. Anyone wishing to study sufism more in depth was told to know their fiqh first, so that they would recognize any sufi practices that crossed the Shari'a border."

Mohammad (sa`aws)
I was reading biographies of the prophet Mohammad (sa`aws) these past couple of days and I'm just blown away by how amazing of a man he was.
Imagine looking at a face that resembled the moon, listening to speech that had no falsehood, touching his hands that were softer than silk, and smelling the prophets (sa`aws) sent that was finer than any musk.
The beloved last messenger of Allah, had such a tremendous burden upon him, to deliver a message to mankind to finalize, perfect, and complete the instructions for all humans to live by Allah's decree. Not only did the prophet (sa`aws) fulfill his trust to Allah (subhanahu wa ta`ala) but he was guaranteed Paradise. Although he was of the very fortunate to know where his final abode would be, he would stay up in the early hours of the morning worshipping Allah, so much so that his feet would swell. This he did, out of gratefulness for the One who Created him.
I can not shake out of my mind the glittering smile he must have had when walking amongst the people that surrounded him. Imagine such a smile shining in your direction, subHan Allah... or even glancing at his black eyes, and long eye lashes. I feel like I can see his wavy hair, his thick black beard, broad shoulders, large hands and joints, medium height.. etc. Imagine such a beautiful man smiling at you, what an amazing thought.
A man that played with children, consoled his friends, loved his wives. His wives, how fortunate they must have been to have such a husband. When he saw others working he would get up and help, his kindness and generosity was unmatched. During RamaDan his generosity then increased, a man who lived with very few material goods, giving all that he had, even regifting his gifts -smiles- subHan Allah.
When on the battle field he did not ever turn back like other men did. Always fighting with full force unwavering. Although his companions were very close and would give their lives to protect him, he even had an arrow pass through his chain mail and it cut his face in which it bled. Two rings stuck in his cheek removed immediately by Abu `Ubaidah (ra). Abu `Ubaidah (ra) removed the rings with his teeth, and his teeth fell out, what love must they have had for the prophet (sa`aws) that his friend would sacrifice his teeth to aid this man.
This man, our beloved prophet, known as the trustworthy, known for his honesty, his character. Although there were people that would doubt and deny the Qur'an, one thing that was undeniable was his reputation, the people were well aware of his extraordinary virtues.
Aaa, the prophet, our beloved prophet (sa`aws)... when on the day of judgment everyone will be worried about their own soul, he will call out for his nation, ... the unselfishness, the care, the kindness, the humility, the softness, the strength, the passion, the trust, the altruism... What characteristic does not embody his great being. What an amazing role model to have, the most perfect example of a good husband, father, friend, ...
Our beloved, Mohammad (sa`aws) we remember him when we testify our faith: I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Mohammad (sa`ws) is the messenger of Allah.
Our Messenger, our role model... Mohammad (sa`aws) how perfect of a human role model. subHan Allah!
What is mind boggling to me is to think that such a man existed. We all strive for perfection, and to think that there was once a man among us that walked and talked, that truly was a living example of God's decree, it's just... like I said... mind boggling.
Imagine! Perhaps one day we will even meet this man. Perhaps we may even drink out of his hands... Perhaps we may pass by him in Paradise... Perhaps he may want to hug you and hold you.... Perhaps we may see his glittering smile. Ya Rab, how we love this man you have sent among us to help guide us. SubHan Allah, what a mercy Allah has given us.
